The Magnolia State, also known as Mississippi is best known as the home of the blues which developed among the freed African Americans in the latter half of the 19th century. Even when one enters the state you will see the Welcome sign that greets “Welcome to Mississippi, Birthplace of America’s Music. Being that I too am from MS, as well as an Emcee, I would always take great pride in this statement. I would always put my heart and soul into my music and because we have a reputation to uphold, I have always been determined to make the best possible art that I can.
Mississippi is responsible for creating some of the world’s greatest music. Some of these musical genres include Blues, Jazz, Rock and Roll, and my personal favorite Hip Hop. I was shocked to find out that Elvis Presley who is known as the “King of Rock and Roll” comes from Tupelo Ms. In his career he had 18 #1 hits in the U.S. from 1956 to 1969.
Another great musician, who is One of my musical inspirations is B.B King. King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. King also is another great artist who comes from the state of Mississippi. King was an American blues singer, electric guitarist, songwriter and record producer who was born on a cotton plantation. He went on to become a Grammy Award winner taking home 15 Grammys and nominated for an additional six more.
In 2003 Mississippi had a monumental moment in Hip Hop when David Banner signed to Universal Records. Banner was born in Brookhaven MS, and raised in Jackson MS. He has produced tracks for rap superstars Lil Wayne, Tip, and Ludacris to name a few. Banner made his mark in the Hip Hop community through releasing four albums for Universal: Mississippi: The Album (2003), MTA2: Baptized in Dirty Water (2003), Certified (2005), and The Greatest Story Ever Told (2008). He also released The God Box in 2017.
As time continued to progress, Mississippi saw even more breakthroughs from other artists to represent the Hip Hop culture. Trap Duo Rae Sremmurd, Big K.R.I.T, and Mike Lowery continue to shape the Hip Hop Culture with the music they produce for themselves and other artists. Being that Mississippi produces so much talent, It is only right to mention T.WILL$.
